Things to do at Jim Corbett National Park.
While visiting Corbett most people aim just to go for an open gypsy safari in Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Garjiya and Durgadevi zones of Corbett or canter safari in Dhikala zone of Corbett but besides safari there are many other things and places to enjoy. You can do a short walk alongwith the Kosi River in the morning, hike to ancient Shiva temple located amidst the forest, Birdwatching and Photography trips nearby, visit Garjiya Temple and Dhangarhi Museum. A brief intro about Corbett National Park.
Corbett National Park was formed in 1936 as the first national park of our country. The name of the park at that time was Hailey National Park which was named after the British Officer Malcolm Hailey whose contribution made possible that this area will be notified as a National Park. After Independence, park was renamed to Ramganga National Park. Ramganga is the largest river which flows through Corbett. It is also known as the lifeline of Corbett.
But after the famous hunter turned conservationist, Edward James Corbett, better known as Jim Corbett or as locals knew them by the name of ‘Carpet Sahab’, died in Kenya, due to his contribution in making this reserve possible, the government changed the name of the park to Corbett National Park. In April 1973, Indian government launched ‘Project Tiger’ with the aim to protect the Royal Bengal Tiger, Corbett got the honor to become the first Tiger Reserve of India as the program was launched from the premises of Dhikala zone.
At present there are 6 zones inside Corbett National Park, from which 5 are available for visitors to enjoy an open gypsy safari. These zones are Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Garjiya & Durgadevi. The 6th zone, Dhikala, can only be visited by two methods; either you can visit by Canter safari which is a shared safari or you should have your night stay booked in advance inside any forest rrest house located in Dhikala zone. If you have a night stay permit with you, only then you are allowed to take a gypsy inside Dhikala zone.
Outside Corbett there are also two other areas where tourists can enjoy safaris in case the limited permits for safaris inside Corbett are sold out. These zones are Sitabani Reserve Forest also known as Corbett Landscape zone and Phaanto Eco-tourism zone. Both of these zones are governed by Ramnagar Forest division & tarai West Forest Divisions resepctively.
